“Going green” is a concept that many people value now more than ever; it is the idea that you are doing all you can to protect the environment through many avenues. Protecting the planet for future generations has become one of the most important issues of our time.
Every day there are products that are analyzed to determine if they are environmentally-responsible enough for the world we live in. An e-cigarette is one such item that has been scrutinized as of late to determine whether or not they are more or less eco-friendly compared to traditional cigarette smoking.
The standard tobacco cigarette contains thousands of carcinogens that are released into the air through the smoke. In fact, it is estimated that cigarettes alone produce approximately 88,878 tons of air pollution each year. That’s as much air pollution as the combined weight of 17,775 elephants!
And then there’s the butts. Did you realize that a traditional cigarette butt can take up to 12 years to disintegrate? This wreaks havoc on our soil and animal life as the toxins leach into the environment. Shockingly, many people continue to toss their cigarette butts on the ground, releasing a non-decomposing type of plastic called cellulose acetate into the soil.
On the other hand, if you are using a reusable e-cigarette as opposed to a disposable cigarette then you have much less waste to deal with. If you do decide to use a disposable cigarette, then you should research the best place to recycle in your area to help offset the environmental damage.
Regardless of your political or religious affiliation, “going green” is something each of us should strongly consider whenever we make a purchase or before carelessly tossing something as damaging as cigarette butts on the ground. For starters, you should consider switching to e-cigarettes as the better choice for our environment.
